The need for developing innovation operations and understanding the functions of an innovation ecosystem are growing constantly. 65% of Finnish companies practice innovation activities and 40% do it in co-operation with peers. Since 2018 the state of Finland has accelerated innovation ecosystem functions by founding innovation ecosystems via VTT for the business areas with the strongest know-how and capabilities in Finland. The goal for the Research and Innovation Council of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is that Finland is the most capable and charismatic innovation district by 2030. The purpose of this thesis was to provide new information about the structures of innovation ecosystems and the special requirements of radical innovations through an innovation study. The goal was to produce a description of a well-functioning structure of an innovation ecosystem and the specifics it entails. Additionally, a secondary goal was to produce the special requirements of radical innovations. The theoretical framework consists of a synthesis of theories about radical innovations, open innovation, co-creation, innovation ecosystems and group dynamics. The research strategy for this qualitative study was innovation study. The material was formed by seven theme interviews, where all the interviewees were professionals in the field of innovation ecosystems. The material was analyzed using an inductive approach. The main output of the thesis is the Handbook for Innovation Ecosystems. It entails a description of a well-functioning structure of an innovation ecosystem, the checklist for the founder of innovation ecosystems as well as the special requirements of radical innovations. The checklist and the special requirements define the most important issues in founding innovation ecosystems and developing radical innovations. The output is a tool for innovation ecosystem functions and plays a role for the public good. It can be utilized by other actors as well as the mandator of the thesis.
